Do you ever have a dream-list? I have mine and it’s becoming more specific over the years that I also name it my “faith list” – a bigger house, many travels abroad with the family and friends, overseas college education for the kids, ability to speak life to women – especially wives and young ladies. A little bit of this and that gadget to answer my needs for reading and writing..ahh.. just so many! While I am blessed to have a husband and a family who support me wholeheartedly in everything that I do, even if at times I have to give up my own desires for a better reason ( because I also need their godly counsel), I am so much limited as a mortal being.. and I embrace that fact.
Fulfilling my dreams, pursuing my heart’s desires may go a long way. God put those in our hearts but ultimately, it is His timeline that prevails over ours. Sometimes I ask, ”is it the time, Lord?” But when I get distracted with a lot of things, my hearing becomes dull.. or I just begin to hear, not really listen. We could be like this – we hear a lot of things even, that we are already confused.
I am reminded of this wonderful story of the sisters, Mary and Martha when Jesus was coming for a visit in their house. The very thing that Jesus told Martha, when she’s up and about , doing a lot of things , busy entertaining Jesus and his men, was this :
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)
I am reminded that I may be busy with a lot of things, I may be busy entertaining Jesus’ friends, tidying up the mess, making sure that when the VIP comes into my house, everything will be PERFECT! But Jesus also reminded me today, that only ONE thing is needful – “Listen to me, my child.” Seek for what is needful, not making my arms full . Just listen – then He will begin to clean up the mess, because He is the one who makes us whiter than snow, the one who gives us a clean slate in life… He is the one who will knock in the doorstep of our hearts and enter to make it His home again… He is the One who is Perfect!
So this is my prayer,” May I be like Mary, Lord Jesus, at your feet and ready to listen. Speak to me today and I will listen and obey. Let me not be anxious of the things of this world. I will not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today (Matthew 6:34). May You continue to guide me as my Shepherd whose voice I know so well. Amen.”
“What is more pleasing to the Lord:
your burnt offerings and sacrifices
or your obedience to his voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice,
and submission is better than offering the fat of rams.”- 1 Samuel 15:22
